P0384: Glow Plug Control Module Control Circuit High

What does P0384 mean?
P0384 reports that the voltage on the control line between the engine computer and the glow plug control module is sitting above the range the computer considers valid. It is the mirror of P0383 in electrical terms, but not in consequence — and the difference in consequence is the reason this code deserves its own attention rather than being treated as the same fault with the sign flipped.
A command line stuck low means the switch-on instruction never arrives: the plugs stay cold, the engine starts hard, and the failure announces itself on the first frosty morning. A command line stuck high can mean the opposite. On systems where a high level is the active state, a line pinned at voltage is a permanent ON instruction. The glow plug control module obediently holds the plugs energised long past the end of the normal preheat and afterglow window. Nothing about that is dramatic from the driver's seat — a diesel idles identically whether its plugs are glowing or not — which is exactly the problem. Glow plug elements are engineered around a duty cycle measured in seconds and minutes, not hours. Held on continuously, they overheat, their tips erode or swell, and they fail early; a swollen tip can seize or break off in the cylinder head, converting a wiring fault into a head-off repair. Meanwhile the system is drawing a large current whenever it is commanded on, and on some fault modes that continues after shutdown, which is how this code occasionally presents as a battery mysteriously flat every morning.
None of that is certain — the other route to a stuck-high line is an open circuit that lets the wire float up, or a short to a nearby feed, in which case the module may simply see gibberish and refuse to glow at all, producing the same hard-cold-start picture as P0383. Which failure you have determines the urgency, and there is a cheap way to find out: measure current on the heater feed, or simply feel whether the plugs' supply cabling is warm when it has no business being so. A glow system that is on when it should be off moves this from a fix-it-soon code to a fix-it-now code.
As with its sibling, check whether your vehicle carries the command as a plain switched voltage or as data on a LIN bus before probing anything — a bus line held high by a failed node sets the same code and needs a different diagnostic approach.
Common causes
- Command wire shorted to battery voltage or an ignition-switched feed where the harness rubs through against a live circuit
- Failed driver stage inside the engine computer holding the command output at rail voltage
- Failed input circuit inside the glow plug control module biasing the shared line upward
- Open circuit allowing the command line to float high on designs with an internal pull-up
- Melted or heat-distorted connector near the exhaust side of the engine fusing adjacent terminals together
- On data-bus systems, a failed node or short holding the LIN line at a fixed high level
- Jump-starting or welding on the vehicle without disconnection, damaging one of the two line drivers
- Aftermarket accessories spliced into the glow circuit feed backfeeding the control line
Symptoms

- Glow indicator lamp staying on well past the normal preheat interval, or never appearing at all
- Burning smell or heat from the glow plug supply cabling after extended running
- Repeated premature glow plug failures — several plugs replaced within months of each other
- Hard cold starting and white smoke where the fault leaves the module unable to read any command
- Engine otherwise running completely normally, with the code as the only evidence
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Determine first whether the system is actually glowing when it should not be. Measure current on the heater supply with the engine warm and the preheat window long past — any sustained draw convicts a stuck-on condition and raises the urgency of everything that follows.
- 2.Check for parasitic drain after shutdown if the history includes flat batteries: pull the glow system fuse or supply and watch the drain disappear.
- 3.Confirm from the wiring diagram whether the command is a switched voltage or LIN data, and identify which level is the active state on this platform — 'high' is a fault on some designs and the normal command on others.
- 4.Back-probe the command line through a full key cycle on a cold engine. A healthy line transitions; a line welded to a fixed high level regardless of key state confirms the code.
- 5.Disconnect the engine computer end and observe the line. If the level collapses, the computer's driver was holding it high; if it persists, the fault is in the harness or the glow module.
- 6.With both ends disconnected, measure from the command wire to every other wire in its loom section, looking for the live circuit it has shorted against — inspect where the harness passes hot or moving components.
- 7.Inspect the glow plugs' recent history. If plugs have been failing early, remove one and examine the tip for erosion or swelling; over-glow damage is physical evidence of how long the line has been stuck.
- 8.After repair, verify the full cycle: command present during preheat, command removed afterwards, and zero heater current once the afterglow window closes.

Budget honestly for collateral damage on stuck-on failures: plugs that have been over-glowed for weeks are consumed even if they still work today, and a set is $80 to $400 in parts — plus meaningful labor on engines where seized plugs fight removal. The inspection of one plug tip is cheap insurance against paying for the control repair twice.
