P0486: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor "B" Circuit
The second of the EGR system's two position-feedback channels is reporting a signal the engine computer cannot accept. On most modern EGR valves that second channel exists specifically so the module can cross-check the first one — which is why this code can set on a valve that is opening and closing perfectly.

What does P0486 mean?
A great deal of confusion around P0486 comes from reading the "B" as a location. It is not. In SAE naming, letters index slots rather than banks, so "B" here means the second EGR position sensing channel, and on the overwhelming majority of vehicles both channels live inside the same valve, on the same side of the same engine, a few millimetres apart. Looking for a second EGR valve on bank 2 is a wasted afternoon.
What that second channel is for is the genuinely useful fact. Exhaust gas recirculation directly changes how much oxygen reaches the cylinders, so a valve that reports the wrong position can make the engine run badly or, on a diesel, cause visible smoke and a failed emissions test. Because a single potentiometer or Hall element can fail in ways that still produce a believable-looking voltage, manufacturers give the valve two feedback channels and arrange them to move in opposition: as the pintle opens, one signal rises and the other falls. The module adds them together. That sum should stay very nearly constant across the entire sweep, and when it does not, the module knows one of the two is lying without needing any other information.
That design gives P0486 a test nothing else in the EGR family offers. Graph both position signals at once on a scan tool and sweep the valve through its full travel. Two healthy channels trace clean mirror-image lines. A worn track shows up as a notch, step, or flat spot in one trace at a specific opening percentage while the other stays smooth — and it explains the code's characteristic behaviour, which is to set at one particular EGR duty and nowhere else. A vehicle that only faults under light cruise, or only during a specific part of a regeneration, is describing a dead spot on a wiper track rather than a wiring fault.
The cost consequence is worth knowing in advance. On older designs where the EGR position sensor bolts to the valve separately, this is an inexpensive part. On most modern valves the sensing element is sealed inside the valve body and is not serviced separately, so a failure in one feedback channel means buying the complete valve. That is not upselling — it is how the part is supplied.
Common causes
- Worn or contaminated track in the second position-sensing channel inside the EGR valve
- Signal voltage out of range because the sensor's reference or return has been lost
- Corroded or water-intruded EGR valve connector bridging the two signal pins
- Chafed EGR harness where it passes near the exhaust manifold or EGR tube
- Soot and oil ingress past a failed internal seal contaminating the position element
- Loose or backed-out terminal in the valve connector producing an implausible reading
- Failed 5-volt reference shared with other sensors, which typically sets several codes at once
- PCM input circuit fault, which is uncommon and should be the last conclusion rather than the first
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with P0486 stored, often alongside another EGR code
- Rough idle or a hesitation that appears only at certain loads
- Reduced power or a limp mode on diesel applications
- Visible smoke on a diesel when EGR flow is mismanaged
- Failed emissions or inspection test
- Slightly worse fuel economy
- Fault that comes and goes with load rather than with temperature or vibration
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read every stored code first. P0486 arriving alongside a 5-volt reference or several unrelated sensor codes points at a shared reference fault rather than at the EGR valve.
- 2.Graph both EGR position signals simultaneously on a scan tool and command the valve through its full sweep. This is the definitive test and takes two minutes.
- 3.Confirm the two traces mirror each other and that their sum stays constant. A notch or flat spot in one trace while the other stays smooth identifies the failed channel.
- 4.Note the exact opening percentage at which the fault appears. A repeatable position points at a worn track; a random one points at wiring.
- 5.With the connector unplugged, verify the 5-volt reference and the sensor ground at the harness side with the key on.
- 6.Inspect the connector for green corrosion, moisture, and spread or backed-out terminals — the two signal pins usually sit adjacent, so a bridge between them is a realistic failure.
- 7.Wiggle-test the EGR harness where it routes near the exhaust manifold or EGR tube while watching live data.
- 8.Check for a manufacturer software update before condemning the valve, since some platforms have revised the plausibility thresholds for this monitor.
Repair cost

If the fault is a corroded connector or a chafed wire, repair is $100-$300. On the minority of vehicles where the EGR position sensor is a separate bolt-on part, it runs $40-$150 plus half an hour. On most modern valves the sensor is sealed inside the valve and cannot be replaced on its own, so the fix is a complete EGR valve at $150-$600 in parts with 0.5-2.5 hours of labour depending on how deeply the valve is buried. Diagnosis is typically $80-$150.
