P0490: Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Control Circuit High

The engine computer tried to pull the EGR valve's control wire down and the voltage stayed up. A line that refuses to be pulled low is nearly always a line with a break in it, which makes the great majority of these codes open circuits rather than shorts to power.

What does P0490 mean?

The instinct on any code with "high" in the title is to go hunting for stray voltage feeding into a circuit that should be quiet. On an EGR control circuit that instinct is backwards, and following it accounts for most of the wasted time on P0490.

The module does not supply power to the EGR valve. It supplies ground. Battery voltage arrives at the valve from a fuse or relay, passes through the solenoid winding, and reaches the module's output pin, which sits high until the module switches it to ground to open the valve. That means the module's own driver decides whether the line goes low, and the driver can only do that if there is a complete current path through the winding. Break the path anywhere — an open coil, a parted wire, a connector that was never latched, a terminal that has retreated into its housing — and the driver switches on, no current flows, and the voltage it is monitoring stubbornly stays high. Absence reads as high on a monitored output. That is the whole code.

So the fastest test is a resistance measurement across the valve's own two pins with the connector off. Solenoid EGR valves typically read in the single digits to low tens of ohms; some designs are in the hundreds, so check the specification for the valve in hand rather than assuming. An infinite reading condemns the valve on the spot and ends the diagnosis. A reading within specification clears it and sends you to the harness and connector, where the failures are mechanical rather than electrical: half-latched plugs, backed-out terminals that look perfectly seated until you pull gently on each wire, and heat-cycled crimps that have released the conductor while the insulation stays flawless.

There is one code-pairing read that belongs only to this member. Because the valve's power feed usually comes from a fuse shared with other emissions hardware — a purge solenoid, a canister vent, sometimes an oxygen sensor heater — a missing feed produces P0490 together with codes from those other devices. If P0490 shows up next to a purge or vent circuit code, stop testing the EGR valve and go find the shared fuse or relay. One blown fuse explains all of them, and testing each device individually finds nothing wrong with any of them.

Finally, resist the reflex to reach for carbon cleaning. A valve stuck open or closed by soot sets flow and position codes such as P0401, P0402, or P0404. It does not set P0490, because a carboned pintle still has a perfectly intact electrical winding. P0490 arriving on its own is a statement that the pintle's position is not the issue.

  • Open winding inside the EGR valve solenoid
  • Broken conductor in the EGR control wire between the valve and the module
  • Connector pushed together without latching, commonly after intake or turbocharger work
  • Terminal backed out of the connector housing while appearing fully seated
  • Blown fuse or failed relay removing the valve's battery feed, often with other emissions codes alongside
  • Corrosion at the valve connector interrupting continuity
  • Heat-damaged crimp releasing the conductor inside intact-looking insulation
  • Failed output driver in the engine control module, which is the least common cause and should be the last conclusion

  • Check engine light on with P0490 stored
  • Often little or no change in driveability, since an unpowered EGR valve simply stays closed
  • Failed emissions or inspection test
  • Slight increase in combustion temperature and possible light detonation on some engines
  • Other emissions circuit codes appearing at the same time when a shared fuse has failed
  • Reduced power or limp mode on some diesel applications
  • Code that sets at key-on rather than after a period of driving

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read all stored codes first. P0490 together with a purge or canister vent circuit code points at a shared fuse or relay rather than at the EGR valve, and that finding changes the whole diagnosis.
  2. 2.Unplug the EGR valve and measure resistance across its two pins. An infinite reading condemns the valve immediately; a reading within specification clears it.
  3. 3.Look up the expected winding resistance for the specific valve. Designs vary from a few ohms to several hundred, so a number that looks wrong may be correct for that part.
  4. 4.With the key on, verify that battery voltage is present at the valve's supply pin. No voltage sends you to the fuse and relay rather than to the wiring.
  5. 5.Push the connector fully home and confirm the latch engages. An unlatched plug is a leading cause and costs nothing to correct.
  6. 6.Pull gently on each wire at the rear of the connector to find a terminal that has backed out of its housing.
  7. 7.Check continuity from the valve's control pin back to the module connector to locate a break in the wire.
  8. 8.Command the valve on with a scan tool while watching the control circuit voltage. A line that never drops confirms no current is flowing, consistent with an open.

A blown fuse is a few dollars, and on this code it is a realistic answer rather than wishful thinking — check it before anything is removed. Latching a connector properly costs only the diagnostic fee. Repairing a broken wire or replacing a terminal is $120-$300. An EGR valve with an open winding is $80-$400 in parts plus 0.5-2 hours of labour depending on access. Module replacement and programming, if the driver has genuinely failed, sits at the top of the range. Diagnosis is typically $90-$160.

Should I be looking for a short to power with P0490?

Rarely. On a ground-side control circuit the module's output sits high by default and only goes low when current flows through the valve's winding. Break that path and the voltage stays high with nothing shorting anything. So most P0490s are open circuits — an open coil, a broken wire, an unlatched plug — and hunting for stray voltage is the wrong first move.

What is the single fastest test for P0490?

Unplug the EGR valve and measure resistance across its own two pins. Infinite means the winding is open and the valve is the answer. A reading within the manufacturer's specification means the valve is fine and the fault is in the harness, the connector, or the supply. That one measurement splits the population in half in under a minute.

P0490 came up along with an EVAP purge code. Is that a coincidence?

Almost certainly not, and it is the most useful clue the scan tool can give you on this code. Emissions solenoids often share a single power feed, so one blown fuse or failed relay leaves several devices unpowered at once and each of them reports a high control circuit. Chase the shared feed rather than testing the devices individually — you will find nothing wrong with any of them.

Can I drive with P0490, and will cleaning the EGR valve help?

You can generally drive with it in the short term. An EGR valve that receives no current simply stays closed, so most vehicles feel normal, though combustion temperatures run a little higher and some diesels reduce power. Cleaning will not help: soot causes flow and position codes like P0401 or P0404, not an electrical open. If P0490 is the only code, the pintle's condition is not what the computer is complaining about.
