P0508: Idle Air Control System Circuit Low
The PCM measured less voltage on the idle air control valve's control wire than the circuit should ever show — usually the wire is dragged to ground, or the module's own output driver has failed shorted.

What does P0508 mean?
P0508 is an electrical measurement, not an airflow complaint. On almost every vehicle that uses an idle air control valve, the valve's coil gets battery voltage from the ignition-run circuit and the powertrain control module completes the path by switching the ground side. The module then watches the voltage sitting on that control wire and compares it to what it commanded. When the measured voltage sits below the low threshold at a moment the driver should be switched off, P0508 sets.
That wiring layout is why the code points where it does. The only ways for the control line to read low when it should be near battery voltage are a copper-to-ground short somewhere in the harness, a coil winding that has shorted internally to the valve body, or a module output transistor that has failed in the conducting state and can no longer let the line rise. All three leave the valve energized when it shouldn't be, so on a conventional two-wire pulse-width valve the practical result is a bypass passage held open — an idle that hangs high and refuses to come down to the target the module is asking for.
The distinction that matters for your wallet: P0508 lives in the same family as P0505, P0506 and P0507, but those three are airflow-outcome codes and this one is a circuit code. If you have P0506 or P0507 without P0508, you are chasing air — a vacuum leak, carbon, a sticking pintle. If P0508 is present, the module is telling you the fault is in copper, in a coil, or in itself, and no amount of throttle body cleaning will move the needle. Start with a meter, not a can of cleaner.
Because the idle air control valve mounts on or beside the throttle body, its connector lives in one of the hotter, more heat-cycled spots under the hood. Green corrosion inside that connector and chafed insulation where the pigtail crosses a bracket are ordinary findings on a fifteen-year-old vehicle and are far more common than a failed module.
Common causes
- Idle air control valve control wire shorted to ground through chafed insulation, often where the pigtail crosses a bracket or the intake
- Internally shorted IAC valve coil grounding through the valve body
- Corroded or water-intruded IAC connector at the throttle body
- PCM output driver failed in the conducting (shorted-low) state
- Pinched harness after a throttle body, intake manifold or valve cover job
- Rodent damage to the engine harness near the throttle body
- Aftermarket accessory or alarm spliced into the wrong wire
- Corroded pin tension in the PCM connector itself
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with P0508 stored
- Idle hangs high and will not settle to the module's target
- Idle speed does not respond to electrical load or air conditioning engagement
- Occasionally a fixed, unusually steady idle that never varies
- P0505, P0506 or P0507 stored alongside as downstream consequences
- Idle air control counts in live data pegged at one end of their range
- Fuse for the ignition-run feed blown on vehicles where the short is severe
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Unplug the IAC valve and clear the code, then key on. If P0508 no longer sets with the valve disconnected, the valve's coil is shorted internally. If it still sets, the fault is in the harness or the module.
- 2.With the valve unplugged and the key off, measure resistance from the control pin on the harness side to a known good chassis ground. Anything other than an open reading is a short to ground in the wiring.
- 3.Ohm the valve itself across its own two pins. A conventional pulse-width IAC solenoid reads roughly 6 to 14 ohms; a reading near zero confirms a shorted winding.
- 4.Inspect the connector shell for green corrosion, spread terminals and moisture. Heat cycling right next to the throttle body makes this connector a repeat offender.
- 5.Follow the pigtail visually from the valve back to the first harness tie, flexing it as you go. Chafe points hide under looms and behind brackets.
- 6.Only after copper and coil are cleared should you suspect the module. A shorted driver is real but it is the least likely of the three and the most expensive to guess at.
Repair cost
$90 – $650
A chafed wire repaired properly with solder and heat shrink is $90-$200 including diagnosis, and that is the most common outcome. An idle air control valve with a shorted coil runs $120-$350 installed depending on whether it bolts to the outside of the throttle body or hides underneath the intake plenum. A failed PCM driver is the expensive branch at $500-$1,400 with programming, but it should never be the first thing bought.
