What does P0511 mean?

P0511 is the undirected member of the idle air control family. Where P0508 and P0509 name a specific electrical direction, P0511 simply reports that the circuit failed its check. Two situations produce it. The first is a calibration that only implements one idle air control circuit code at all, so every electrical fault in that circuit lands here regardless of which way the voltage went. The second is a fault the module genuinely could not classify — an intermittent connection, a reading that wandered outside limits in both directions, or a self-test that failed without a clean high or low signature.

The valve design behind the code matters more here than anywhere else in the family. Many vehicles use a four-wire stepper-motor idle air control valve rather than a two-wire pulse-width solenoid.
