P0543: Intake Air Heater "A" Circuit Open
The module commanded the heater and detected no current flow whatsoever. On a modified truck the most common explanation is not a failure at all — it is that the heater was physically removed during an intake upgrade and never accounted for.

What does P0543 mean?
This code is set by a different kind of check from its siblings. Rather than reading a voltage and judging whether it is too high or too low, the strategy behind an open-circuit code asks a binary question: when I closed the switch, did anything draw current? A no answer means the path from supply to ground is broken and nothing is connected at the end of it.
That distinction has a practical consequence. A degraded but still partly conductive circuit — a corroded stud, a tired relay, a partially open element — tends to set a high-circuit code, because there is still some current and the voltage merely lands in the wrong place. A completely severed path sets this one. So P0543 narrows the field to things that are entirely absent rather than merely poor, and that is a smaller list.
The first item on that list surprises people, and it is worth stating plainly because it accounts for a real share of these codes in the field: on modified diesel pickups, the grid heater is frequently removed. Aftermarket intake horns, ported manifolds and some performance intake kits either delete the heater plate or leave no provision for it, and the element gets unbolted and set on the bench during the install. The wiring stays, the relay stays, the module still commands a preheat cycle every cold morning, and there is now nothing at the end of the circuit to draw current. The code that results is completely correct. If you have bought a used truck with intake modifications and are chasing this code, look at whether the heater is still physically there before you diagnose anything electrical.
Where the heater is present, an open circuit means one of a small number of severed connections. The fusible link or high-current fuse in the feed is the designed sacrificial point and the cheapest thing to check. The relay may have an open coil so it never closes at all. The element can burn through internally, which on a grid heater usually means one of the ribbons has cracked at a support. And the ground return can be open, which on designs that ground through the manifold means checking a strap or a mounting face rather than a wire.
The symptom picture is the same as any dead intake heater: nothing at all in mild weather, and progressively worse cold starting as temperatures fall, with extended cranking and white unburnt-fuel smoke below freezing. What differs is that with a genuinely open circuit there is no partial function to soften it. The heater is not weak, it is absent, so the cold-weather complaint tends to arrive fully formed rather than creeping in over a season.

- Blown fusible link or high-current fuse in the heater supply
- Open relay coil, so the relay never closes and no current is ever switched to the element
- Burnt-through element with a cracked ribbon, typically failing at a support point
- Disconnected or missing ring terminal at an element stud after previous engine work
- Severed feed cable, including internally broken strands inside undamaged insulation
- Open ground return where the element grounds through the manifold or a dedicated strap
- Broken control wire between the module and the relay coil
Symptoms
- Long cranking on cold mornings with no improvement from repeated attempts
- Heavy white unburnt-fuel smoke for the first thirty seconds of a cold start
- Very rough running and audible misfire until the engine begins to warm
- Entirely normal operation in mild weather, with the code stored and no complaint
- No relay click and no momentary lighting dip at key on where they used to be present
- Zero current draw on the heater feed cable when the heater is commanded
- Wait-to-start lamp absent, or the preheat sequence completing far faster than normal
- Check engine light with no change in power, economy or warm idle quality
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Look at the intake and confirm the heater element is still fitted. On a vehicle with any aftermarket intake work this single check resolves a meaningful share of P0543s, and every electrical test that follows is wasted effort if the component is sitting in a box in the owner's garage.
- 2.Clamp the feed cable and command the heater with a scan tool. Zero current confirms the open and distinguishes this from the partial faults that set high-circuit codes, which is the whole basis for treating this code differently.
- 3.Check the fusible link or high-current fuse first among the electrical possibilities. It is the least expensive item, it is designed to fail before anything else does, and a dead heater produces no symptom in warm weather so it may have been open for months.
- 4.Test the relay coil for continuity and the contacts for closure. An open coil produces exactly this code and no others, and it is a cheap part to prove rather than assume.
- 5.Check continuity through the element itself, comparing across the studs. A grid heater reads well under one ohm when healthy, so what you are looking for here is the unambiguous case — a genuinely infinite reading, which means a broken ribbon rather than a degraded one.
- 6.Verify the ground return. On designs that earth the element through its mounting face or a strap to the block, corrosion or a missing fastener creates an open just as effectively as a cut wire, and it is easy to overlook because there is no obvious cable to inspect.
