What does P0576 mean?

P0576 reports that the cruise control input circuit sat below its acceptable voltage window. The instinctive reading is that something in the cruise wiring is dragging the line down, and often that is right. But there is a second explanation that produces an identical symptom, is far less obvious, and cannot be fixed by any amount of work on the cruise circuit — so it is worth establishing which one you have before spending an afternoon.

A control module does not measure voltage in the abstract. It measures the difference between an input and its own ground connection, and it assumes that ground connection sits at zero. When a module's ground path degrades — a corroded ring terminal, a loose stud, a paint-contaminated mating surface — that assumption breaks. The module's internal reference floats upward, and every input it reads appears lower than it truly is. Nothing is wrong with any individual circuit. They all read low together because the ruler they are measured against has moved.

That gives you a decision rule that is quick, free and reliable: count the codes and look at what kind they are. A single low-side fault on the cruise input points at the cruise input. Several low-side faults, stored by the same module and spread across inputs that share nothing except that module, point at the shared ground. Working the individual circuits in the second case means testing several perfectly healthy wires one after another while the actual fault sits at a bolt.

The other cause worth putting on this page specifically is water, because of where these switches live. Cruise controls sit on the steering wheel or on a column stalk, directly beneath the base of the windscreen. Two drainage systems pass through that area and both of them block. Sunroof drain tubes run down inside the pillars and fill with pollen, grit and leaf fragments. The scuttle drains at the base of the windscreen collect the same debris. When either backs up, water runs down inside the A-pillar and finds the column shroud, which is not a sealed space and was never intended to be.

Water across switch contacts does something specific: it creates a low-resistance path where the design intended none, so the circuit reads low without any component having failed. It also dries out. That is why these faults follow the weather — present after rain, absent for a fortnight, back after a wash. When a customer says it only does it when it is wet, they have handed you the diagnosis. Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Read every code in the vehicle and sort them by type before doing anything else. If this is the only low-side fault, work the cruise circuit. A module reads every one of its inputs against its own ground reference, so when the reference lifts, everything it measures reads low at once.
  2. 2.Locate the ground stud the receiving module uses and take it apart rather than looking at it. A ground that appears perfect can still be carrying a few tenths of a volt across a corroded ring terminal, and a few tenths is enough to push borderline readings out of range. Clean the terminal and the mating surface to bright metal, refit and torque it, then retest before touching anything else.
  3. 3.Ask directly about weather. Whether this happens in rain, after a wash, or on humid mornings and not on dry ones is diagnostic information rather than small talk. A moisture correlation means you are looking for water, and water arrives somewhere specific rather than everywhere.
  4. 4.If moisture is implicated, trace the drainage above the fault rather than the wiring at it. Sunroof drain tubes run down the pillars and block with debris. Windscreen scuttle drains fill with leaves. Both dump water down the inside of the A-pillar and into the column shroud area, which is precisely where cruise switch wiring lives. Clear the drain and the electrical fault stops coming back.
  5. 5.Inspect the switch assembly and its connector for staining, greenish deposits or a visible tide mark. Water that has been across a set of contacts and dried leaves evidence, and finding it confirms the diagnosis rather than merely supporting it.
