The word "high" makes people hunt for stray voltage. It is almost always the opposite — modules deliberately bias these inputs high so that a disconnected wire is recognisable, which makes this an open-circuit code by design.

What does P0577 mean?

P0577 means the cruise control input circuit sat above the voltage window the module accepts. Reading it correctly requires knowing something about how these inputs are built, and knowing it inverts the instinct the word "high" produces.

Modules do not leave switched inputs floating. A floating input is electrically meaningless — it picks up whatever noise is nearby and reports nonsense. So the input is biased through an internal resistor to a known voltage, usually near supply. That resting state is what the module sees when nothing external is influencing the pin. When a switch closes and pulls the line toward ground, the module sees the change and interprets it as a button press.

The design consequence is the point of this page. A disconnected wire, a broken conductor or an unplugged connector all leave the input at its biased resting value — which is high. The module is engineered so that "nothing connected" is a state it can recognise rather than a state it has to guess at. So a high reading is what an open circuit looks like, by design, on purpose.

That matters because the word "high" reliably sends people looking for voltage that should not be there: a short to a battery feed, a chafe against a live wire, an accessory installation that has fed something in. Those faults do exist and they do produce this code. They are simply the smaller share. The larger share are breaks, and a break is found by dividing the circuit and testing, not by hunting for an intruder.

On vehicles where the cruise controls live on the steering wheel, one component deserves attention ahead of everything else. The clockspring is a flat, spirally wound ribbon of conductors that carries wiring across a joint that rotates, and it is the only part of this circuit that physically moves every time the vehicle is steered. Its conductors work-harden and fatigue with use, and they eventually separate — but often not everywhere at once. A partially broken clockspring conductor can be intact at one steering position and open at another, which produces a fault that seems arbitrary until someone connects it to which way the wheel was pointing. Cruise that fails on left-hand bends and works on the straight is not a coincidence and it is not the switch. It is worth adding that the driver's airbag circuit passes through the same component, so an airbag warning stored alongside this code turns a suspicion into something close to a conclusion.

The last item worth naming is a connector terminal that has backed out of its retaining lock. This is a genuinely nasty fault to chase because the connector looks and feels normal from the outside, disconnecting and reconnecting it can restore contact for a while, and everybody concludes the problem was a dirty connection until it returns a month later. It is also why a continuity test that beeps proves less than people assume — a meter probe pushed into a terminal makes the contact the vehicle could not.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Reframe what you are hunting before you start. A module holds this kind of input near supply voltage through an internal resistor so that nothing connected reads as a specific, recognisable state. That means the reading you are chasing is the module's resting condition, and the overwhelming majority of these are opens — a broken conductor, an unseated connector, a terminal that has backed out. Searching for a short to battery voltage is looking for the rare case first.
  2. 2.Ground the circuit deliberately at the module connector, briefly, with the wiring diagram open so you know which cavity. If the reading drops to zero and the module registers the change, the module input and the connection you just made are both fine, and the fault is somewhere between there and the switch. That is one test that clears half the circuit.
  3. 3.Repeat the same test at the switch end. A circuit that responds at the module but not at the switch has the break between the two points, and you have now bracketed it without removing a single trim panel.
  4. 4.Put live data on the screen and turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock, watching for the input to change on its own. Fatigued conductors inside a clockspring have a rotational position where they separate, so a fault that appears at a particular steering angle and clears when the wheel comes back is a clockspring finding rather than a switch finding.
  5. 5.Do not trust a continuity beep on a suspect connector. A meter probe pushed into a terminal forces the contact closed and reports a joint that will not carry current under load. Check pin retention by feel with the correct probe, look for spread terminals, and where possible test the circuit with a load rather than with a tone.
  6. 6.Inspect the connector faces for a terminal that has slid backwards out of its lock. This produces an intermittent that is invisible from the outside, is not repaired by unplugging and reconnecting, and comes back a few weeks after everyone concluded it was fixed.

If you are confident with restraint systems and will follow the service procedure exactly, it is achievable. If any part of that sentence gives you pause, this is a good one to hand over.

Do I need to fix this?

Not for safety, as far as the cruise control is concerned — the vehicle drives and stops entirely normally and you have lost a convenience. The reason to look at it anyway is what the cause might be. If the clockspring is the culprit, the same failing part carries the driver's airbag circuit, and that is not something to leave broken. Check whether an airbag warning light is on. If it is, get it seen to regardless of how you feel about cruise control.
