P0683: Glow Plug Control Module to PCM Communication Circuit

What does P0683 mean?
Every other code in the glow plug range describes heating hardware: a plug, a branch of the harness, the module's output side. P0683 describes none of that. It says the powertrain control module (PCM) asked the glow plug control module a question and got no answer back. The plugs themselves may be brand new and drawing perfect current, and this code will still be stored, because the fault sits on the link between two computers rather than anywhere near the cylinder head.
That distinction matters because it changes the first thing you touch. Chasing glow plugs on a P0683 is the most common way to spend money on this code and still have it come back.
What you check first depends on how the two modules are wired together, and manufacturers do it in three genuinely different ways. Some use a pair of discrete hardwired lines — one for the PCM's request, one for the module's status report — which behave like any other low-voltage circuit and respond to ordinary continuity and voltage testing. Some use a dedicated single-wire serial link between just those two modules, where a scope shows a data waveform rather than a steady voltage and a meter tells you almost nothing. Some hang the glow plug module off the vehicle's shared CAN bus alongside everything else.
The stored code pattern tells you which architecture you are in without opening a wiring diagram. If the glow plug module is on the shared bus, a fault that silences it will normally also produce lost-communication codes from or about other modules, and the correct job is a bus diagnosis rather than a glow plug diagnosis. If P0683 is standing alone with no network codes anywhere, the link is almost certainly dedicated, and the problem is in a short, specific run of wire that you can find and fix.
Diesel glow plug modules are also mounted in unusually hostile places — low on the engine, near the exhaust manifold, or in the wheel arch on some applications — so the connector and its pins deserve inspection before anything is condemned. Heat cycling backs terminals out of their locks, and road salt finds diesel harnesses the same way it finds everything else underneath a vehicle.
Common causes
- Open, shorted, or corroded wiring in the communication line between the PCM and the glow plug control module
- Corroded or backed-out terminals in the glow plug control module connector
- A network fault affecting the whole bus, where the glow plug module shares CAN with other modules
- Loss of power or ground at the glow plug control module, so it cannot respond at all
- A failed glow plug control module
- A replacement module installed without the programming the vehicle expects
Symptoms
- Check engine light with P0683 stored, often alongside a glow plug warning lamp
- Hard starting or extended cranking in cold weather
- Rough running and white exhaust smoke until the engine warms
- Glow plug or wait-to-start indicator that never lights, or stays lit
- Glow plug system data missing or reading as unavailable on a scan tool
- No symptom at all in warm weather, with the code found on a routine scan
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan every module, not just the engine controller, and write down whether any network or lost-communication codes are present — that answers whether this is a bus problem or a dedicated-wire problem.
- 2.Attempt to communicate with the glow plug control module directly on a capable scan tool. A module that answers the tool but not the PCM points at the link; a module that answers nothing points at its own power, ground, or internals.
- 3.Confirm the module has battery voltage and a clean ground at its connector before testing any signal wire.
- 4.Inspect the module connector closely for green corrosion, heat damage, and terminals that have backed out of the housing.
- 5.For a discrete hardwired link, check continuity end to end and check for a short to ground or to power on each communication wire.
- 6.For a serial or CAN link, check the line's resistance and look at the waveform on a scope rather than trying to read it with a meter.
- 7.Only after power, ground, and the link have all been proven good should the glow plug control module be replaced — and confirm whether your vehicle needs it programmed.
