What does P0682 mean?
P0682 is the cylinder 12 glow plug channel, and it is the end of the road for per-cylinder numbering. The block that begins at cylinder 1 runs to cylinder 12 and stops there, because twelve is as far as production compression-ignition engines go in the vehicles this standard was written for. **There is no cylinder 13 code, and nothing above P0682 is another cylinder.**
That sounds like trivia until you are staring at a list of stored codes trying to work out what to test. The glow plug system is diagnosed in layers, and the code numbers tell you which layer complained. Sorting them takes seconds and saves you from testing the wrong thing:
**A numbered cylinder code is a branch fault.** It names one plug, one terminal, one wire and one controller output. The controller worked, it talked to the engine computer normally, and it reported that one specific channel misbehaved. This is the layer where you measure resistance, compare plugs and inspect terminals.
**The controller circuit code is a device fault.** It says the engine computer has a problem with the glow plug control module itself or the circuit to it, rather than with any individual plug. Testing plugs here is wasted effort; the module's power, ground and control wiring are the target.
**The codes immediately above this block are conversation faults.** P0683 and P0684 cover the communication circuit between the glow plug control module and the powertrain control module — the two computers failing to talk to each other, not any heating element failing to heat. A code from that group with no cylinder codes alongside it is not a plug problem at all.
Read in that order, the code list tells you which layer to open before you open anything physical.
The other thing to be realistic about is the vehicle. **A twelve-cylinder diesel is a rare machine.** In road cars it belongs to a very small group of large luxury vehicles; beyond that, twelve-cylinder compression-ignition engines are mostly industrial, marine, rail and generator units. Either way, the practical constraints are the same and they are not the constraints of a common diesel pickup. Parts availability is limited and often single-source. Independent workshops may not have the tooling or the software to talk to the glow plug controller properly. A full set is twelve plugs of a type that is usually expensive. And access on an engine of this size, in the bay of a vehicle designed around it, tends to be poor.
So the sequencing advice is blunt: **do the cheap, non-invasive checks thoroughly before authorising anything.** Confirm the code with a tool that carries the manufacturer's definitions, sort the code list into the three layers above, measure every plug's resistance from its terminal, and check the feed under load. On this engine the difference between diagnosing carefully and diagnosing by replacement is measured in thousands, not hundreds.

- Remaining original plugs at the end of their service life, failing in succession
Symptoms
- Extended cranking on cold starts, disproportionate to the ambient temperature
- Rough running, noise and misfire during the first minute from a cold start
- White smoke on cold start clearing as the engine warms
- Check engine light with P0682 stored, often alongside other glow plug codes
- A code list mixing cylinder codes with module or communication codes, pointing at more than one layer
- Cold-start problems appearing after a control module replacement or reflash
- Entirely normal running and power once at operating temperature
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Read every stored code with a tool that carries the manufacturer's own definitions rather than a generic lookup table.
- 2.Sort the codes into layers before testing anything: numbered cylinder codes are branch faults, a glow plug control module circuit code is a device fault, and the communication codes just above this block are the module and the engine computer failing to talk.
- 3.If the list contains only communication codes, do not test plugs — the fault is in the link between the controllers.
- 4.Confirm the engine's cylinder numbering and locate cylinder 12 physically before any dismantling.
- 5.Measure the resistance of all twelve plugs at their own terminals and record every reading, since the spread across the set informs the repair decision as well as identifying the outlier.
- 6.Measure voltage at the cylinder 12 terminal during an energised preheat cycle to separate a resistive joint from a failed element.
- 7.Inspect connectors in the valley between the heads for fluid intrusion, and the terminal itself for corrosion and heat damage.
- 8.Check the service history for module replacement, reflash or donor parts, which can produce channel faults on an engine that is mechanically fine.
