What does P0684 mean?
Range/performance is the phrase that decides how this code should be worked, and it is routinely ignored. It means the powertrain control module (PCM) is receiving a response from the glow plug control module — the wire is not broken, nothing is shorted, and every continuity test you run will pass. What triggered the code is that the content of the response is implausible.
That is why P0684 costs people so much time. A technician who reaches for a multimeter is measuring the one thing that is definitely fine.
Implausibility has a specific meaning to the PCM: it compares what the module claims against what it knows independently. Three mismatches account for most of these codes. The module reports its glow output energised while the PCM sees no corresponding current draw on the circuit. The module reports a state that never changes — the same value at a cold start on a winter morning and after an hour at operating temperature — which is what a stuck or defaulted value looks like from the outside. Or the module's timing is wrong: it acknowledges a preheat request either far too quickly or well after the window in which it should have acted.
Two causes deserve naming because they are invisible to circuit testing and neither is a broken wire.
The first is a calibration mismatch, and it is overwhelmingly a post-repair code. A glow plug control module fitted from a different model year, a different market, or a different engine variant is electrically perfect and speaks the correct protocol, but its message format or scaling does not match what this PCM expects. The circuit is flawless and the two modules are talking past each other. If P0684 appeared immediately after a module replacement or a software update, that history is the diagnosis and no amount of wire testing will find it.
The second is a marginal ground. The glow plug module measures everything against its own ground reference. Let corrosion add half a volt of offset to that ground and every value the module reports shifts by the same amount — still a smooth, believable-looking signal, just consistently wrong. A ground like that carries enough current to pass a continuity check and still fail under load, which is why the useful test is a voltage drop measured while the glow circuit is actually energised, not a resistance reading with the key off.
Common causes
- A replacement glow plug control module with the wrong calibration or part number for the vehicle
- High-resistance or corroded ground at the glow plug control module, skewing every reported value
- Corroded or partially seated connector pins adding resistance without breaking the circuit
- Internal fault in the glow plug control module causing it to report defaulted or frozen values
- Low system voltage or a weak battery pulling the module's reported values out of range
- Software mismatch between the PCM and the glow plug module after an update to only one of them
Symptoms
- Check engine light with P0684 stored and no obvious driveability complaint
- Glow plug system live data that looks static or clearly does not match conditions
- Hard cold starting even though the glow plugs themselves test good
- Code returns shortly after a glow plug control module was replaced
- Rough running or white smoke on cold mornings that clears once warm
- Wait-to-start lamp timing that feels wrong — too brief, too long, or absent
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Ask what changed. If a module was replaced, reflashed, or the vehicle was recently repaired, verify part numbers and calibration level before touching any wiring.
- 2.Watch glow plug system live data through a full cold start and warm-up. Values that never move, or that contradict the ambient and coolant temperatures, are the fault you are looking for.
- 3.Compare the module's reported glow state against actual current draw on the glow circuit using a clamp meter — a claim of 'on' with no current is the classic implausibility.
- 4.Measure voltage drop across the glow plug module's ground while the glow circuit is energised. Anything beyond a couple of tenths of a volt is a fault, even if continuity is perfect.
- 5.Check battery and charging voltage, since a weak supply can push reported values out of their expected window without anything being wrong with the module.
- 6.Inspect the connector pins for corrosion and for the slight spreading that adds resistance while still making contact.
- 7.If calibration, ground, supply voltage and connector are all proven good and the reported data is still implausible, the module itself is faulty.

A ground repair or connector cleanup can resolve this for little beyond diagnostic time. A reprogramming or recalibration visit typically runs $80-$250. A glow plug control module runs roughly $150-$550 plus labor and, on many vehicles, programming. Diagnostic time is a larger share of this bill than on most codes because the fault is in data rather than in hardware.
