What does P0748 mean?
P0748 sets when the transmission control module or PCM sees an electrical problem in the circuit that drives pressure control solenoid "A" — an open circuit, a short to ground or power, or a coil resistance outside the expected range. The module measures the current it can push through the solenoid and the voltage it sees in return, and when those numbers do not match what a healthy circuit should produce, it flags P0748.
The distinction from its siblings is what makes this code useful. P0746 says the solenoid answers electrically but the transmission does not get the pressure it asked for, which is a hydraulic complaint. P0747 says the valve is stuck applied. P0749 says the fault comes and goes. P0748 is the one code in the family that points squarely at wiring and coil rather than at fluid and valve body — which means the diagnostic order is different, and following it correctly can turn what looks like a transmission job into a connector repair.
Pressure control solenoid A, also called the line-pressure, EPC, or variable-force solenoid, controls mainline hydraulic pressure. Line pressure determines how firmly the clutches and bands apply during every shift. When the module cannot control it electrically, most transmissions default to maximum line pressure, which is why the classic P0748 complaint is harsh, slamming engagements, or they drop into a fail-safe limp mode locked in one forward gear.
The good news is that the failure is frequently outside the transmission. The pass-through case connector where the internal wiring harness meets the external harness is a well-known weak point: fluid wicks up the wire strands, the seal hardens, and the terminals corrode. Chafed harness sections where the wiring crosses the case or bellhousing are the next most common finding. Only after those check out does the solenoid coil itself become the likely culprit — and unlike a hydraulic fault, an electrical one can be measured definitively with a meter rather than inferred.

- Internal harness damage inside the transmission from debris or heat

- Water intrusion into an external solenoid connector
- Failed TCM or PCM solenoid driver, only after the circuit has tested good
Symptoms

- Harsh, abrupt, or slamming shifts from default maximum line pressure
- Transmission stuck in limp mode, typically one forward gear plus reverse

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan all modules. A companion P0700 confirms the transmission module has stored faults; note whether P0746, P0747, or P0749 are present, since a mix of codes changes the picture.
- 2.Check transmission fluid level and condition anyway. It is not the likely cause of an electrical code, but it takes two minutes and rules out a compounding problem.
- 3.Inspect the external harness from the module to the transmission for chafe points, melted insulation, or damage where it crosses the case or bellhousing.
- 4.Unplug the transmission case pass-through connector and inspect it closely for fluid intrusion, green corrosion, spread terminals, or a hardened seal — this is the single most common failure point.
- 5.Measure the solenoid coil resistance at the case connector and compare it to the manufacturer's specification. An open reading or a value well outside spec identifies a failed solenoid or its internal wiring.
- 6.Check the circuit for a short to ground and a short to power with the connector unplugged at both ends.
- 7.Back-probe the driver circuit at the module and verify it is switching as commanded with a scan tool or a scope.
- 8.If external wiring and the case connector test good but resistance at the case connector is wrong, the fault is inside the transmission — internal harness or the solenoid itself.
- 9.After the repair, clear the codes, relearn adaptive shift pressure if the manufacturer requires it, and road test through all gear ranges.
