What does P0783 mean?

The controller asked for fourth, watched the ratio between input and output shaft speed, and did not get the answer it wanted. The mechanics of that check are the same as for any other named shift. What is different about 3-4 is the company it keeps.

On a great many four-speed automatics, third gear is direct drive — the input and output turn at the same speed, a ratio of one to one — and fourth is overdrive, where the output turns faster than the input. That makes 3-4 the only shift in the sequence where the ratio crosses below one, and on many designs it is executed by a separate overdrive section at the back of the case with its own planetary set, its own holding element and often its own one-way clutch. It is, in a real sense, a different piece of the transmission from the one doing the lower shifts.

The more important difference is the torque converter clutch. On most vehicles the converter clutch is applied in top gear or in the range immediately around it, which means the 3-4 region typically contains two events rather than one: the gear change, and the converter locking up.
