What does P0784 mean?

The controller commanded fifth, checked input shaft speed against output shaft speed, and did not get the ratio it expected. The check is routine. What is not routine is what the existence of the code tells you before any testing begins.

A transmission cannot report a failed 4-5 shift unless it has a fifth gear. That single fact excludes the entire population of four-speed automatics, and with them a lot of the hardware that the lower shift codes have to consider. Five-speed and larger automatics are a later generation of design, and they tend to share a set of characteristics: clutch-to-clutch operation with little or no reliance on bands, individual pressure-controlled solenoids rather than simple on-off shift solenoids, and adaptive learning strategies that adjust apply pressures continuously over the life of the unit. So when a 4-5 shift goes wrong, a worn band is rarely the answer, because there usually is not one. Solenoid characteristics drifting, and adaptive values that have learned around a developing problem, are much more likely candidates than they would be on an older four-speed.

The conditions in which this shift occurs are unlike any of the others, and that inverts the usual wear reasoning. A 1-2 shift happens at every set of traffic lights. A 4-5 happens only when the vehicle is already at speed, generally at light throttle, on a road that lets it settle — which for most vehicles is a small fraction of their journeys. The elements involved therefore accumulate the fewest applications in the whole transmission. Genuine wear-out here is uncommon, and treating a 4-5 complaint as ordinary mileage-related wear is usually the wrong instinct.

What those elements do get is heat. By the time a vehicle is making 4-5 shifts it has usually been running for a while, so the fluid is at full temperature, and the pump is turning fast at low demand. That combination brings a specific set of faults forward: solenoid winding resistance that climbs with temperature and only misbehaves once hot, fluid thinned enough that a marginal seal starts to leak past, and line pressure that is adequate cold and slightly short hot. A 4-5 complaint that only appears at the end of a long run, and is absent when the vehicle is fresh, is pointing at that group directly.

There is a practical consequence to where this shift lives that catches people out. It happens at cruising speed with road and wind noise, well away from the quiet low-speed environment in which a 1-2 flare is obvious. Many drivers never feel it at all and arrive with nothing but a warning light. That means the evidence has to come from data logging rather than from a description of the symptom, and it also means the fault may have been present far longer than the light suggests.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Establish the temperature relationship first. Drive the vehicle from cold and again after a long run, logging both. A fault that only exists when hot points at solenoid resistance, fluid condition or a marginal seal, and it changes the whole shape of the diagnosis.
  2. 2.Confirm the fault really is confined to the 4-5 shift. Everything below it working normally exonerates the pump, the fluid supply, the speed sensors and general line pressure.
  3. 3.Check whether adaptive shift learning has been reset since any previous transmission, solenoid or module work. On this generation of transmission, adapt values are a real and common cause rather than a formality.
  4. 4.Log gear ratio through the shift and confirm what actually happens — a ratio that never arrives, or one that arrives and slips back, mean different things.
  5. 5.Measure line pressure at full operating temperature, not on a cold vehicle. Pressure that is fine cold and short hot explains a complaint that only shows up at the end of a run.
  6. 6.Measure solenoid resistance both cold and hot where service data provides both figures. A winding that is in specification cold and out of it hot is a fault most quick tests will miss entirely.
  7. 7.Verify the fluid is the exact specification the manufacturer calls for. Later multi-speed transmissions are considerably less tolerant of the wrong fluid than older units, and shift quality is the first thing to suffer.
  8. 8.Check for controller software updates. Shift calibration revisions are common on this class of transmission and occasionally resolve the complaint outright.
  9. 9.Inspect the pan magnet and filter last rather than first. Given how few applications this shift accumulates, an absence of friction material here is meaningful evidence in favour of a control or pressure fault.
