What does C0374 mean?
C0374 sets when the transfer case shift control module detects a persistent speed difference between the front and rear propshaft speed sensors and cannot correct it. In an automatic four-wheel-drive system, when the rear wheels start slipping the module commands the transfer case clutch to send torque to the front axle. It then watches the front and rear propshaft speeds to confirm the slip is being pulled back into line. If it applies torque several times and still cannot bring the speed difference under control for about 10 consecutive seconds, it concludes the system is not doing its job and sets C0374.
Because this is a performance/functional code rather than a simple circuit fault, its root cause can sit in several places: a slipping or worn transfer case clutch that cannot actually transfer torque, a front or rear propshaft speed sensor giving bad data (so the comparison is wrong), wiring and connector problems, or the encoder motor and control module not moving the clutch as commanded. A common contributor is water intrusion through nicked speed-sensor wiring insulation, which corrupts the readings and makes the module think slip is not being corrected.
When the code is active AUTO 4WD is disabled and the Service 4WD light stays on until the next restart (and returns if the fault is still present). The vehicle usually still drives in 2WD or a selectable range, but the automatic torque-on-demand feature is out of service.
Because this is a manufacturer-specific chassis code (most documented on GM trucks and SUVs), confirm your vehicle's exact definition. Diagnosis should start with the front and rear propshaft speed signals and the transfer case's ability to actually engage before assuming the clutch or module has failed.

- 5.Verify the transfer case can actually engage — command it with a scan tool and confirm the clutch applies and the encoder position changes.
- 6.If sensors, wiring, and engagement are good but slip cannot be corrected, suspect a worn transfer case clutch and inspect internally per the manufacturer procedure.
