C0327: Transfer Case Encoder Circuit Malfunction
The Transfer Case Control Module received an illogical or out-of-range signal from the transfer case encoder — the sensor that reports which range the transfer case is actually in. It is one of the most common 4WD codes on GM trucks, and bad grounds are behind a large share of cases.

What does C0327 mean?
C0327 sets when the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) reads an illogical, out-of-range, or invalid signal from the transfer case encoder. The encoder is the position-feedback part of an electronic-shift four-wheel-drive system. As the encoder motor rotates the shift shaft, the encoder reports the shaft's exact position back to the module, so it always knows whether the transfer case is in 2WD, 4-High, 4-Low, or Auto. Without a valid encoder signal, the module cannot confirm a shift completed and cannot safely command a new one.
This is one of the most common four-wheel-drive trouble codes on GM trucks and SUVs. A well-documented and important detail: bad grounds and connector problems cause a very large share of C0327 codes — by many accounts more than half. The transfer case sits low and exposed, so its grounds and connectors corrode, and a poor ground alone can make the encoder signal look invalid even when the encoder itself is fine. That is why experienced techs check grounds and connections before replacing parts.
When the code is active the 4WD system typically will not engage or disengage properly, the Service 4WD message appears, and in some cases the driver hears unusual noises from the transfer case as it tries and fails to complete a shift. The vehicle usually keeps driving in whatever range it was already in.
Because C-codes are manufacturer-specific, confirm your vehicle's exact definition. On GM the encoder is often combined with the shift/encoder motor assembly, so a failed encoder may mean replacing the motor assembly — but only after grounds, connectors, and wiring have been ruled out.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Retrieve C0327 and any companion codes (C0306 motor circuit, C0374 system, C0387 unable to complete shift).
- 2.Inspect and clean the transfer case grounds first — a poor ground is the leading cause and a cheap fix.
- 3.Inspect the encoder / motor connector and harness for corrosion, water intrusion, and chafing.
- 4.Use a scan tool to read the encoder position value and compare it to commanded and expected positions.
- 5.Test the encoder circuits for continuity, shorts, and correct reference/ground.
- 6.If grounds, connectors, and wiring are good but the encoder signal stays invalid, replace the encoder/motor assembly and recalibrate per the manufacturer procedure.
