What does C0306 mean?
C0306 sets when the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM), or the shift control module on some vehicles, detects a fault in the transfer case encoder motor's 'A' or 'B' control circuit. On electronic-shift four-wheel-drive systems (the kind with 2HI / 4HI / 4LO / AUTO buttons on the dash), the encoder motor is a small permanent-magnet DC motor and gear reduction bolted to the transfer case. When commanded, it rotates the transfer case's shift sector shaft to change ranges and to apply force to the clutch that engages the front axle.
The motor is driven through two control circuits, usually labeled Motor Control A and Motor Control B. To turn the motor one direction the module powers A and grounds B; to reverse it, the roles swap. C0306 is set when the module detects an open, a short to ground, a short to voltage, or low voltage on the A or B circuit, or an open or short inside the motor itself.
When the code is active the module protects the system by disabling all shifting. On a mode-change request the dash mode light typically flashes and then returns to the current mode instead of completing the shift, and the Service 4WD indicator stays on for the rest of that ignition cycle. The vehicle usually keeps driving in whatever range it was in.
Because this is a manufacturer-specific chassis code (most common on GM trucks and SUVs, though other makes use similar systems), confirm your vehicle's exact definition. Note that a few references label C0306 as a 'range/actuator control circuit' code; on GM applications the widely documented meaning is the encoder motor 'A or B' circuit. Wiring, connectors, and grounds cause a large share of these faults, so inspect the circuit before condemning the motor.

- 5.Measure the motor windings for an open or short; command the motor with a scan tool if supported and watch its response.
- 6.Repair wiring or grounds as needed; if the circuits are good but the motor is dead, replace the encoder motor and relearn/recalibrate per the manufacturer procedure.
