What does C0387 mean?
C0387 sets when the electronic-shift transfer case is unable to successfully complete a shift to a requested mode or range. On these systems the transfer case range actuator (the encoder/shift motor) moves the internal shift mechanism between 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD High (locked), 4WD Low, and Neutral. When the driver selects a new mode, the control module runs the actuator and watches the encoder feedback to confirm the shift completed. If the mechanism cannot reach and confirm the new position — because it binds, the motor cannot move it far enough, or the feedback never confirms — the module aborts and sets C0387.
This is a functional 'did-not-complete' code rather than a plain circuit fault, so it commonly rides along with the more specific codes that explain why. A failing transfer case encoder motor is a frequent underlying cause, showing up as flashing 4HI indicator lights and the system dropping back to 2HI. Worn or binding internal shift components, low battery voltage during the shift attempt, and wiring or connector problems can all prevent a clean shift.
When the code is active the transfer case typically reverts to the last valid mode so you are not left in an undefined state, the requested-mode light flashes and then returns to the current mode, and Service 4WD is displayed. Shift attempts should generally be made at a stop or low speed as the owner's manual specifies; trying to force shifts at speed can make the condition worse.
