What does P0009 mean?
P0009 is set when the module finds the camshaft-to-crankshaft relationship on bank 2 outside its tolerance window. Bank 2 is the cylinder head that does not contain cylinder number 1, and the existence of this code as a separate entry tells you something about the engine before you look at anything: it has two banks, so it is a V, a flat or a W, and everything in the valve drive exists in duplicate.
That duplication is where the useful reasoning lives, and it starts with whether this code came alone. The two banks share a crankshaft, a crank sprocket, a primary drive, an oil pump and a supply of oil. If both banks had drifted, those shared items would be the obvious suspects. A bank 2 code arriving on its own argues the opposite way: whatever has moved is downstream of everything the banks have in common. On engines with a secondary chain per bank, that means bank 2's own chain, its tensioner, its guides or its phasers — and it substantially reduces the value of pulling oil samples or worrying about the primary drive. Read the code list before forming an opinion, because the same fault description means two different investigations depending on what sits next to it.
The second thing this code carries that its bank 1 counterpart cannot is a cost structure driven by access. On a transverse V6 or V8, bank 2 is frequently the bank against the bulkhead, and reaching the timing components on that side is not a matter of removing a cover. Depending on the vehicle it can mean the engine rolled forward on its mounts, the subframe lowered, or the powertrain out. That is why a bank 2 timing repair is rarely priced as half of a two-bank job. It is also why, once the front of the engine is open, the sound decision is usually to renew the chains, guides and tensioners on both banks together — the parts are a small fraction of the labour, and coming back in eighteen months for the other side means paying the access cost twice.
There is a specific wear pattern behind a bank-2-only code that is worth naming. On several widely produced V6 designs the camshafts on each bank are driven by their own secondary chain fed from the primary, and those secondary chains, their tensioners and their guides are the documented wear items — particularly where oil change intervals were stretched. A code on one bank with no complaint from the other fits that pattern closely, and it is the first thing an experienced technician will check on those engines.
As with any cam-to-crank correlation fault, the mechanism is progressive. A chain slack enough to shift measured cam timing is a chain capable of jumping a tooth, and on an interference engine that ends in valve contact. The difference here is only that the repair to prevent it is more expensive, which makes putting it off more tempting and less wise.
Common causes

- Failed tensioner or worn guide on the bank 2 chain, allowing slack that the module reads as a position error
- Camshaft phaser on bank 2 unable to hold or return to its default position
- Blocked oil control solenoid screen restricting flow to the bank 2 phasers
- Neglected oil service that has varnished the narrow passages feeding the phasers
- Camshaft sprocket loose or a sprocket bolt that has backed off on bank 2
- Previous timing work on one bank set up a tooth out on reassembly
- Failed or noisy chain that has already jumped and settled in a new position
Symptoms
- Chain rattle from one side of the engine on cold start, quieting once oil pressure builds
- Rough idle with a slight shake that does not fully clear when warm
- Extended cranking before the engine will start
- Loss of power that is most obvious under load or on hills
- Misfire codes clustered on the cylinders of one bank
- Reduced-power mode engaging intermittently
- Poor fuel economy and a noticeably lazier throttle response
- Rattling that gets louder over weeks rather than staying constant
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Check whether P0008 is stored alongside. Both banks implicates the shared drive and the oil; bank 2 alone points at that bank's own chain, tensioner, guides and phasers.
- 2.Identify which physical side of the engine bank 2 is on for this specific vehicle before quoting access time, since transverse installations often put it against the bulkhead.
- 3.Check oil level and condition, and establish the service history, since starved phaser passages are a cause on both banks and are cheap to rule out.
- 4.Look up whether the engine uses a single chain to both banks or a primary chain with a secondary chain per bank, because that determines what a one-bank code can and cannot mean.
- 5.Compare commanded against actual camshaft position on live data for both banks, so the bank 2 offset can be quantified rather than assumed.
- 6.Listen at cold start with the engine bay open to establish which side the rattle comes from, which corroborates the code before any disassembly.
- 7.Inspect and clean the bank 2 oil control solenoid screens, and compare them against bank 1's as a reference for how fouled they really are.
- 8.Verify the timing marks physically once access is gained, and count teeth rather than assuming the chain has only stretched.
- 9.Carry out a cylinder leakage test on the bank 2 cylinders if a jumped tooth is suspected, before committing to a chain job that may need head work anyway.
- 10.After repair, relearn cam position, clear the codes, and confirm both banks track commanded position on a road test rather than only at idle.

An oil service with the control solenoid screens cleaned is $60 to $200 where neglected oil was the cause. Diagnosis is $120 to $250, and on a V engine it is worth paying for properly because the access decision that follows is expensive. A cam actuator solenoid is $130 to $400 fitted. A phaser is $400 to $1,100 per unit. Timing chain work on the rear bank of a transverse V engine is the number that surprises people: $1,400 to $3,000 is common where the engine must be rolled forward or the subframe dropped, and doing both banks while the front is open typically adds parts cost but very little labour, which usually makes it the cheaper decision over the life of the vehicle. Valve damage from a jumped chain on an interference engine takes the total past $3,500.
