A fault on the cylinder 7 glow plug channel. Seven cylinders means a V-configuration diesel, and on a V the useful move is to convert the stored codes into a bank map — because which cylinders share a feed depends on the maker's numbering scheme, not on the numbers looking next to each other.

What does P0677 mean?

P0677 reports that the glow plug controller measured something outside specification on the cylinder 7 channel. Mechanically the possibilities are unremarkable: element, terminal, wire, module output. What is different about this code is the shape of the engine it came from.

**A seventh cylinder means a V-configuration diesel** — a V8, a V10 or a V12. Nothing with the cylinders in one row goes that far in production vehicles. That single deduction changes the most important question from "which part failed" to **"which bank is this, and what does it share with the other cylinders that are reporting?"**

On a V engine the glow plug wiring is almost always organised by bank. Each side gets its own harness branch, often its own bus bar or connector strip along that head, and on many systems its own group of outputs from the controller. So the codes that arrive together are not just a list of failures — they are a map, and reading them correctly tells you in thirty seconds whether you are looking at one plug or one side of the engine.

The catch is that **you cannot draw that map from the numbers alone, because cylinder numbering is a manufacturer's convention rather than a physical layout.** Two schemes dominate on V8s and they produce completely different pictures from the same set of codes. Some manufacturers number one bank straight through and then the other, so cylinders 1 to 4 are on one side and 5 to 8 on the opposite side. Others alternate across the vee, so the odd numbers are on one bank and the even numbers on the other. Under the first scheme, P0677 and P0678 are neighbours on the same head. Under the second, they are on opposite sides of the engine and share nothing but the controller. Same two codes, opposite conclusions.

So the first action on this code is a lookup, and it takes a minute. Get the cylinder numbering and firing order for the specific engine, write the reporting cylinders onto it, and then read the result:

**All the codes fall on one bank.** That is a bank-level fault, not a run of coincidental plug failures. Look at that side's harness branch, its bus bar strip, the connector where the branch leaves the main harness, and the controller output group that serves it. One thing is failing, not four.

**Codes are scattered across both banks.** Now the plugs really are failing individually — which is entirely normal on a high-mileage engine where they are all the same age — or something common to both sides is marginal, meaning the controller, the main supply, the relay or the ground.

**Only cylinder 7 is reporting.** A single branch: that plug, that terminal, that wire, that output channel. Confirm which physical cylinder it is before removing anything, because on a V engine getting the side wrong means dismantling the wrong bank, and on these engines the dismantling is most of the labour.

Common causes

  • Cylinder 7 glow plug element open or drifted high in resistance
  • Bank-side harness branch damaged, chafed or disconnected where it crosses the vee
  • Corroded or loose terminal on the cylinder 7 stud, or a slack bus bar nut on that bank's strip
  • Failed controller output group serving one bank, which presents as several codes from the same side
  • Connector where the bank branch leaves the main harness corroded or backing out
  • Coolant, oil or washer fluid intrusion into a bank connector sitting in the valley of the engine
  • Poor common ground or weak main supply affecting the whole glow circuit
  • Failed cylinder 7 output channel inside the glow plug control module
  • Mixed or wrong-specification plugs after a previous partial replacement

Symptoms

  • Extended cranking from cold, disproportionately bad if a whole bank has stopped preheating
  • Rough running and misfire for the first minute of a cold start
  • White smoke on cold start, heavier when several cylinders on one side are affected
  • Check engine light with P0677 stored, frequently alongside other cylinder glow plug codes
  • A cluster of glow plug codes that all belong to the same side of the engine once mapped
  • Cold-start problems that are mild in autumn and severe in deep winter
  • Normal running and normal power once the engine reaches operating temperature

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Record every stored code first. On a V engine the set of codes is more informative than any single one of them.
  2. 2.Look up the cylinder numbering scheme for this specific engine. Do not assume the numbers run along one bank and then the other — many manufacturers alternate across the vee.
  3. 3.Plot the reporting cylinders onto that numbering and decide which of three pictures you have: one bank, both banks, or a single cylinder.
  4. 4.If the codes cluster on one bank, test that bank's harness branch, its bus bar or connector strip, and the connector where the branch leaves the main harness — before testing any plug individually.
  5. 5.If codes appear on both banks, test the shared items: controller, relay, high-current fuse, main supply and ground.
  6. 6.If cylinder 7 is alone, confirm which physical cylinder that is on this engine, then work that one branch.
  7. 7.Measure the resistance of every plug on the engine and compare them. Matched low readings with one outlier identifies the failed element.
  8. 8.Inspect bank connectors for fluid intrusion, particularly any that sit in the valley between the heads where leaks and washer overspray collect.
  9. 9.Check voltage at the cylinder 7 terminal during an energised preheat cycle rather than relying on continuity alone.
  10. 10.Verify the repair after an overnight cold soak, since the glow circuit is only exercised during preheat.

Not directly. Glow plugs assist cold starting and clean cold running; they are not load-bearing on a warm engine. What a whole bank of cold cylinders does cause is much harder starting, heavy white smoke and a noticeably rough warm-up, and repeated hard cold starts are unkind to the starter and the battery. It is a repair to schedule, not an emergency.

Can I keep driving with P0677?

Yes in the short term. The engine runs normally once warm and nothing is being damaged by a single cold cylinder. Reassess if the code count grows or the weather turns — a V diesel with several plugs down on one side can go from slow-starting to not-starting over one cold night, and it is a much bigger vehicle to have stranded.
