P2118: Throttle Actuator Control Motor Current Range/Performance
The engine control module is monitoring how much current the throttle motor draws and does not like what it sees. Unlike the circuit codes, this one is about the amount of current, not the presence of it — which usually means the motor is fighting something, or is worn out inside.

What does P2118 mean?
The throttle actuator control motor is a small reversible DC motor inside the throttle body that moves the throttle plate against a return spring. The engine control module drives it with a pulse-width-modulated signal and monitors the current flowing through it. That current draw is a useful diagnostic in its own right: a healthy motor moving a free-swinging plate draws a predictable, modest amount, rising briefly when the plate is accelerated and settling once it reaches position.
P2118 sets when the measured current falls outside the expected window for the movement being commanded. This distinguishes it clearly from the circuit codes in the P2100 to P2103 group. Those are about whether the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power — a presence-or-absence question. P2118 is a quantity question. The circuit works, the motor is connected and current is flowing, but the amount is wrong.
Current too high is the more common direction and has a mechanical explanation more often than an electrical one. Carbon buildup around the throttle plate, a bent plate, a failing shaft bushing, or debris drawn in through the intake all make the motor work harder to reach the same position, and that extra effort shows up as excessive current. A partially shorted motor winding produces the same reading electrically. Current too low points at added resistance somewhere — a corroded connector pin, a partially broken conductor, degraded brushes inside the motor — or at a motor whose windings have opened up in part.
Because the module treats an untrustworthy throttle actuator as a safety matter, P2118 almost always brings a fail-safe with it. Expect reduced power, forced idle, or an RPM cap alongside it, and expect the accompanying fail-safe code from the P2104 / P2105 / P2106 / P2110 group. In that pairing, P2118 is the code that names the actual fault and the fail-safe code is the response.
One more thing worth knowing before ordering a part: on almost every modern vehicle the throttle actuator motor is not sold separately. It is integrated into the throttle body assembly along with the position sensors and the gear train, so a genuinely failed motor means a throttle body. That makes it well worth ruling out the cheap causes first — a clean-out, a connector repair, or a charging system fix — before committing to the assembly.

- Debris or foreign object in the throttle body jamming or restricting plate travel
- Worn throttle shaft bushings or a bent plate causing binding
- Partially shorted throttle actuator motor windings drawing excessive current

- Corroded or high-resistance connector pins at the throttle body adding circuit resistance
- Chafed or partially broken wiring in the throttle actuator circuit
- Low system voltage from a weak battery or failing alternator distorting current measurements
- Poor ground causing inaccurate current monitoring at the module
- Failed throttle body assembly — motor, sensors and gears are integrated on most vehicles
- Failed engine control module driver circuit (rare — verify everything else first)
Symptoms

- Engine may stall at idle or when coming to a stop

- A fail-safe code from the P2104 / P2105 / P2106 / P2110 group stored alongside it
- Condition sometimes clears briefly after a key cycle, then returns
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan every module and record all stored and pending codes with freeze frame data. Note whether a fail-safe code is stored alongside — that pairing confirms P2118 is the naming code and the fail-safe is the response.
- 2.Test the battery and charging system before anything else. Low or unstable system voltage skews the current the motor draws and can set this code on a perfectly healthy throttle body.
- 3.Inspect the throttle body connector for corrosion, green residue, backed-out pins, and a properly seated lock. Added resistance here directly changes measured current.
- 4.Remove the intake ducting and inspect the throttle bore. Look for carbon buildup around the plate edges and shaft, oil residue from the crankcase ventilation system, and any foreign debris.
- 5.With the key off and the connector unplugged, move the throttle plate by hand through its full travel. It should move smoothly against spring pressure and snap closed cleanly. Gritty resistance, a catch at one point, or side-to-side shaft play all point at the throttle body.
- 6.Clean the throttle bore and plate carefully with an appropriate cleaner if buildup is present, taking care not to damage any coating, then perform the throttle relearn procedure and retest.
- 7.Measure the throttle actuator motor resistance across its two pins with the connector disconnected and compare against specification. A reading well below spec suggests shorted windings; a very high or open reading suggests worn brushes or an open winding.
- 8.Compare commanded throttle position against actual throttle position in live data while sweeping the pedal. A plate that lags, overshoots, or hunts around the target supports a mechanical or motor problem.
- 9.If a current-capable meter or scope is available, observe actual motor current during a commanded sweep and compare it against the manufacturer's expected profile.
- 10.Voltage-drop test the module and engine grounds; poor grounds distort the module's current measurement reference.
- 11.If the bore is clean, the plate moves freely, wiring and connectors are sound, and motor resistance is out of spec, replace the throttle body assembly and perform the required relearn procedure.
