P2119: Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance
The throttle plate is not going where the engine control module told it to go. The circuit is fine and the motor is trying — the plate is simply not landing at the commanded position, which points at the throttle body itself rather than at its wiring.

What does P2119 mean?
On a drive-by-wire vehicle the engine control module commands a throttle plate angle and then verifies it. It sends a signal to the actuator motor inside the throttle body, watches the two throttle position sensors report where the plate actually ended up, and compares that against what it asked for. When the two agree, everything proceeds normally. P2119 sets when they do not — when the commanded and actual positions differ by more than the allowed tolerance, or the plate takes too long to get there, or it cannot hold the position once it arrives.
The distinction that makes this code useful is that it is a mechanical-performance code, not an electrical one. The circuit codes at P2100, P2102 and P2103 tell you the wiring is open or shorted. P2118 tells you the motor's current draw is out of range. P2119 tells you the plate is not achieving the commanded angle even though the electrical side is working. In practice that narrows the search dramatically: the fault is almost always inside the throttle body, and most often it is something physical.
Carbon buildup is the leading cause by a wide margin. Oil vapor and blow-by from the crankcase ventilation system condense in the throttle bore and bake into a hard deposit around the plate edges and the shaft. That deposit does two things — it stops the plate from closing fully to the true idle position, and it adds friction that keeps the plate from settling accurately. The module sees a plate that will not reach its target and sets P2119. On a vehicle with a gasoline direct injection engine there is no fuel washing over the back of the intake valves or through the throttle bore, so this buildup accumulates faster and shows up earlier than it did on older port-injected engines.
Beyond deposits, the physical causes are worn throttle shaft bushings that let the plate wander, a broken or weakened return spring, a stripped tooth in the internal gear train, a bent plate from a dropped object or a botched cleaning, and a failed return-spring mechanism that no longer defines the default position. There are also non-mechanical causes worth ruling out: a throttle position sensor that is misreporting where the plate actually is will produce a mismatch even with a perfect plate, and low system voltage will make the motor too sluggish to reach position in the allotted time.
Because the module cannot trust a throttle it cannot position, it will take authority away — expect reduced power, forced idle, or an RPM cap, and expect the corresponding fail-safe code from the P2104 / P2105 / P2106 / P2110 group alongside this one.

- Debris drawn in through a poorly sealed or aftermarket air filter jamming the plate
- Failing throttle position sensor misreporting the plate's actual position
- Worn or failing throttle actuator motor too weak to hold position
- Low system voltage from a weak battery or failing alternator slowing plate movement
- Throttle relearn procedure never performed after a previous cleaning or replacement
- Vacuum leak downstream of the throttle plate causing an idle-position mismatch
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, usually with a reduced-power or wrench warning
- Reduced engine power or limp mode
- Rough, hunting, surging, or unusually high idle
- Engine stalls at idle or when coming to a stop
- Hesitation or a flat spot when accelerating
- Throttle response feels delayed or inconsistent from one press to the next
- Idle speed noticeably different after a throttle body cleaning that skipped the relearn
- A fail-safe code from the P2104 / P2105 / P2106 / P2110 group stored alongside it
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan every module and record all stored and pending codes with freeze frame data. Note any fail-safe code stored alongside — that is the response, and P2119 is the naming code.
- 2.Ask whether the vehicle recently had a throttle body cleaning, a battery disconnect, or throttle body replacement. A skipped relearn procedure is a genuinely common cause of this code and costs nothing to correct.
- 3.Test the battery and charging system. A sluggish motor caused by low voltage produces the same commanded-versus-actual mismatch as a mechanical fault.
- 4.Compare commanded throttle position against actual throttle position in live data while an assistant sweeps the pedal slowly through full travel. Watch for lag, overshoot, hunting around the target, or a plate that stops short at one particular angle.
- 5.Inspect the throttle body connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, and a properly seated locking tab.
- 6.Remove the intake ducting and inspect the throttle bore directly. Look at the plate edges and the shaft area specifically — that is where deposits build first and matter most.
- 7.With the key off and the connector unplugged, move the throttle plate by hand through its full travel. It should move smoothly against spring pressure and snap firmly closed. A catch at one point, gritty resistance, a weak return, or noticeable side-to-side shaft play each point at a specific failure.
- 8.Clean the bore and plate carefully with a cleaner appropriate for the throttle body's coating, working the plate open by hand rather than forcing it, then perform the manufacturer's throttle relearn procedure and retest.
- 9.Display both throttle position sensor signals together while sweeping the plate. They should track each other smoothly; a flat spot or a dropout in one indicates a sensor fault rather than a mechanical one.
- 10.Check for vacuum leaks downstream of the throttle plate — an unmetered air path shifts the idle relationship and can present as a positioning mismatch.
- 11.If the plate binds by hand, the shaft has play, the return spring is weak, or the code returns after a correct cleaning and relearn, replace the throttle body assembly and perform the relearn again.

A replacement throttle body assembly is the common outcome when the plate or shaft is worn, at roughly $250-$700 installed, with the part alone running about $150 on mainstream models and $500 or more on European and luxury platforms.
