P2196: O2 Sensor Signal Stuck Rich (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

What does P2196 mean?

The upstream oxygen (O2) sensor on Bank 1 reports the air-fuel ratio to the engine control module (ECM) from its spot in the exhaust ahead of the catalytic converter. In closed loop it should swing quickly between roughly 0.1 volts (lean) and 0.9 volts (rich) as the ECM constantly trims fuel.

P2196 is a rationality fault, not a wiring fault. The circuit is intact, but the sensor signal is stuck or biased toward the rich side and stops responding when the ECM leans the mixture out. The ECM commands less fuel and waits for the voltage to drop toward lean; when it stays high anyway, the ECM flags the signal as "biased/stuck rich" and sets P2196.

"Bank 1" is the side containing cylinder 1; "Sensor 1" is the upstream sensor. As with the stuck-lean code, there are two honest explanations. Either the sensor is contaminated or worn and biased high, or the engine really is running rich and the sensor is telling the truth. Fuel trims are the tie-breaker: strongly negative long-term fuel trim (the ECM subtracting fuel) means the mixture is genuinely rich, while near-normal trims with a non-switching sensor point at the sensor. Common contaminants that bias a sensor rich include silicone from the wrong RTV sealant, oil or coolant from an internal leak, and excess fuel from a prior flooding event.

  4. 4.Check fuel pressure against spec and look for a leaking injector (a scope or noid light and cylinder balance test help).
