P2197: O2 Sensor Signal Stuck Lean (Bank 2, Sensor 1)

What does P2197 mean?
This code is the Bank 2 counterpart of P2195. The upstream oxygen (O2) sensor on Bank 2 sits in the exhaust ahead of the catalytic converter and tells the engine control module (ECM) whether that bank is running rich or lean. In closed loop the sensor voltage should swing rapidly between roughly 0.1 volts (lean) and 0.9 volts (rich) as the ECM trims fuel.
P2197 is a rationality fault rather than a wiring fault. The circuit is intact, but the Bank 2 upstream sensor signal is stuck or biased toward lean and no longer responds when the ECM adds fuel. After the sensor fails to swing rich despite added fuel, the ECM flags it as "biased/stuck lean" and sets the code.
"Bank 2" is the side of a V-configured engine that does not contain cylinder 1; inline engines have only Bank 1, so P2197 does not apply to them. "Sensor 1" is the upstream sensor. The two real explanations are a worn or contaminated sensor that has lost its ability to swing rich, or a genuine lean condition on Bank 2 that the sensor is correctly reporting. Because the fault is limited to one bank, a bank-specific cause — such as an intake or exhaust leak feeding only that cylinder head, or a partially clogged set of injectors on that bank — is more likely than a whole-engine problem. Comparing Bank 1 and Bank 2 fuel trims quickly shows whether the lean condition is real and one-sided.

- Aged or contaminated upstream Bank 2 oxygen sensor that has lost its ability to swing rich (most common)
- Exhaust leak upstream of the Bank 2 sensor letting in outside air that reads lean
- Bank-specific vacuum or intake manifold leak feeding only that cylinder head
- Clogged or under-delivering injectors on Bank 2 (often with P0174)
- Low fuel pressure affecting both banks but flagged first on Bank 2
- Corroded or loose O2 sensor connector
- Damaged sensor signal or heater wiring

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Scan for all codes. P2197 with P0174 points to a real lean condition on Bank 2 rather than a lazy sensor.
- 2.Watch Bank 2 Sensor 1 voltage live and compare it with Bank 1 Sensor 1. A healthy sensor switches quickly; with P2197 the Bank 2 signal sits low and flat.
- 3.Compare Bank 1 and Bank 2 fuel trims. A lean bias on Bank 2 only points to a bank-specific leak or fuel-delivery issue.
- 4.Inspect for exhaust leaks ahead of the Bank 2 sensor and for intake/vacuum leaks on that cylinder head.
- 5.Check fuel pressure and inspect the Bank 2 injectors for restriction.
- 6.Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion or chafing.
- 7.If the mixture is confirmed correct and the sensor is old, replace the upstream Bank 2 sensor.
Repair cost

Sensor replacement runs about $150 to $400 in parts and labor. On some transverse V6 engines the Bank 2 sensor sits against the firewall and is harder to reach, pushing labor toward the high end.
