What does C0085 mean?
C0085 refers to the pressure-release valve serving the left rear brake inside the hydraulic control unit. The brake module energizes that valve and monitors the circuit, and it logs this code when the electrical behaviour does not match the command — an open, a short, or current outside the window the module accepts.
Rear valves earn their keep differently from front ones. The rear axle contributes a minority of stopping force, and rear brake pressure is deliberately limited, because a locked rear wheel is destabilising in a way a locked front wheel is not: the back of the car loses its ability to resist yaw and begins to rotate. But those same rear valves are the ones the vehicle uses constantly outside of emergencies. Electronic brake force distribution trims rear pressure on every ordinary stop as load shifts. Hill start assist holds pressure at the rear while your foot moves from brake to throttle. Trailer sway control, brake-based torque vectoring and, on many vehicles, the automatic hold function all operate by applying and releasing individual rear brakes. Lose confidence in one rear release valve and a cluster of features that never announced themselves as brake features quietly stop working.
That is why the owner complaint attached to this code often sounds unrelated to braking. People arrive describing hill hold that no longer holds, an auto hold button that does nothing, or a trailer that suddenly feels less settled — and the underlying fault is a rear valve circuit.
Check the hydraulic split before you assume a valve failed. Most front-wheel-drive vehicles pair the left rear with the right front on a single diagonal circuit, so those two codes appearing together indicate one shared electrical problem rather than two independent failures.
Rear wiring fails for different reasons than front wiring, and this changes where you look. There is no steering articulation back here, so the flex-fatigue breaks that dominate front harness diagnosis are rare. What dominates instead is corrosion: the rear brake and wheel-speed wiring runs the length of the underbody through everything the tires throw at it, and two contamination routes exist back here that the front simply does not have — a weeping axle seal wicking gear oil into a connector, and on drum-equipped rear axles a steady supply of brake dust. Look for green terminals and oil-soaked connector shells rather than for broken conductors.

Diagnostic steps
- 1.Record every stored code before testing. A left rear code alongside a right front code on a diagonally split system means one shared fault, and treating them separately leads to unnecessary parts.
- 2.Confirm battery condition and charging voltage. Valve current thresholds are voltage-sensitive and a tired battery fabricates convincing brake faults.
- 3.Inspect the left rear wheel-end connector for green corrosion and for oil contamination. A weeping axle seal soaking a connector is a rear-specific failure route with no front equivalent.
- 4.Follow the rear underbody harness for salt damage, stone impact and chafe at body clips. Corrosion, not flex fatigue, is what usually kills wiring back here.
- 5.Check the main connector at the hydraulic unit and voltage-drop test the module's power and ground under load rather than at rest.
- 6.If power, ground, connectors and wiring all check out and the code returns immediately after clearing, the internal valve is the remaining explanation and the hydraulic unit needs replacement or rebuild.
