What does C0156 mean?

C0156 completes the set. Two channels, two valves each, four codes — and this is the highest-numbered of them, which makes it the one most often seen at the end of a long list on a scan tool screen. That position is worth using, because a complete sweep of all four means something categorically different from any one of them appearing alone.

Four independent solenoid windings do not fail together. When every traction valve circuit in the modulator reports a fault at once, the thing that has failed is not the valves — it is something all four depend on. The candidates are short: the valve power supply feeding the whole block, the module's ground, or a supply rail on the circuit board that serves the driver stage. Each of those is testable in minutes and two of them are inexpensive to fix. Approaching a four-code set as four broken parts is the most expensive mistake available on this family of codes, and it is a common one, because the sheer length of the code list makes the module look comprehensively dead.

There is a second reason this code merits its own discussion, and it is about what happens after the repair. These valves cannot be bench tested and cannot be replaced individually — they live inside a sealed hydraulic block. When the module is replaced, brake fluid has to be moved through valve passages that a conventional two-person pedal bleed never opens. Most manufacturers require a scan tool that can cycle the valves and run the pump during bleeding, and skipping that step is the usual explanation for a soft, long pedal after an otherwise correct module swap. Anyone planning this repair at home should confirm they have access to that capability before the old unit comes off, not afterwards.

The third consideration is which replacement route makes sense. A new unit from the manufacturer is the most expensive and the most certain. A remanufactured unit is cheaper and usually still needs programming to the vehicle. A mail-in repair of the original board is the least expensive path and avoids programming entirely, since the vehicle keeps its own module and its own configuration — but the car is immobile while the module is away. A used module from a scrapyard is the cheapest of all and the riskiest, because it carries another vehicle's configuration and unknown internal wear on exactly the components that just failed on yours.

Common causes

  • Failed valve power supply or module ground, which is the leading cause when all four traction codes appear together
  • Open or shorted winding in the second right-channel traction valve, when this code appears alone
  • Driver stage or supply rail failure on the module's circuit board
  • Corroded module connector, particularly after water has entered from a failed seal
  • Blown or high-resistance fuse on the valve power feed, which is separate from the module's logic supply
  • Weak battery or charging fault making valve current measurement unreliable
  • Damaged harness between the module and the vehicle's power distribution centre
  • Prior module replacement completed without the scan tool bleed procedure, leaving trapped air and unresolved faults

Symptoms

  • Traction control, ABS and stability control warning lamps all illuminated
  • Long list of brake module codes rather than a single stored fault
  • No traction control intervention on any driven wheel, in any condition
  • Base brakes fully functional with normal pedal feel
  • Soft or long pedal following a recent module replacement, indicating an incomplete bleed
  • Speedometer or other shared readings behaving oddly, on vehicles where the brake module distributes wheel speed data
  • All four traction valve codes present simultaneously, which is the pattern that points at a shared cause

Diagnostic steps

  1. 1.Count the codes before analysing any of them. All four traction valve codes together is a shared-supply diagnosis; C0156 alone is a single-winding diagnosis. The two paths have almost nothing in common and choosing the wrong one wastes the entire session.
  2. 2.Test the module's valve power feed and its ground with voltage drop measurements under load, not with a continuity check. On a four-code set this single test resolves the majority of cases.
  3. 3.Check every fuse associated with the brake system, including the high-current valve supply, which is often in a separate location from the logic-power fuse and is easy to overlook.
  4. 4.Inspect the module connector seal as well as its terminals. Water that has entered past a hardened seal reaches multiple circuits at once and reproduces a full-sweep code set convincingly.
  5. 5.Before committing to a module, confirm you can complete a scan tool assisted bleed afterwards. These valves cannot be opened by pedal pressure alone, and a module fitted without that procedure will give a soft pedal that no amount of conventional bleeding fixes.
  6. 6.If replacing the module, decide the route deliberately: new or remanufactured with programming, a mail-in repair of the original board with no programming but with downtime, or a used unit that carries another vehicle's configuration and unknown wear.

A confirmed internal failure means the hydraulic control unit: $600-$1,200 for a new or remanufactured module installed, programmed and bled with a scan tool. A mail-in board repair on the original module runs $150-$350 plus shipping and avoids programming entirely, at the cost of the vehicle being off the road. Budget an extra $90-$180 for the scan tool assisted bleed if the shop lists it separately — it is not optional on this system.

I have all four traction solenoid codes. Is the module finished?

Do not assume so, because that pattern argues against four failed parts rather than for them. Independent solenoid windings do not fail simultaneously; what fails simultaneously is something they share. Test the valve power supply, the module ground and the associated fuses first. A resistive ground alone can produce every one of those four codes with a perfectly healthy hydraulic unit, and it is the cheapest fix on the list. Reach for the module only after the shared circuits have been measured and cleared.

Can I replace the module myself?

The mechanical part is straightforward — brake lines, a connector and mounting bolts. The part that catches people is afterwards. Traction valves sit in passages that ordinary pedal bleeding never opens, so most manufacturers require a scan tool capable of cycling the valves and running the pump to purge air from the unit. Without that step the pedal ends up soft and long, and no amount of conventional bleeding recovers it. Confirm you have access to that tool before the old module comes off, not after.

Is a used module from a scrapyard a reasonable way to save money?

It also carries unknown wear on exactly the internal components that failed on yours. A mail-in repair of your own board is often only slightly more expensive, keeps your module's existing configuration, and comes with a warranty — a better balance for most owners.

Why is there no cheap way to fix just the one valve?

Because the valves are not a serviceable part. They are pressed into a machined aluminium block with the pump, the accumulator and the pressure passages, and the block is assembled and tested as a unit at the factory. There is no port to open, no coil to unbolt and no part number to order. That is why the diagnosis matters so much on this code: the difference between finding a bad ground and concluding the valve has failed is the difference between a modest repair and replacing an entire assembly.
