C0090: Right Rear ABS Solenoid #1 Circuit Malfunction

What does C0090 mean?
As at every corner, solenoid #1 is the isolation valve — open in normal driving, commanded closed when the module wants to stop pressure rising at that wheel. C0090 means the module's command and the electrical response it measures do not agree at the right rear.
The thing that makes this corner distinctive is what depends on it beyond stopping the vehicle. A modern hydraulic unit is not just an anti-lock device; it is the actuator for a whole family of features that quietly use individual wheel brakes. Hill-start assist holds pressure at the rear wheels while your foot moves from brake to accelerator. Brake-hold and automatic parking brake integration do the same at a standstill. Stability control applies a single wheel to correct a slide. Trailer sway control, on vehicles equipped with it, works by pulsing individual brakes to damp out a swinging trailer. Every one of those needs the ability to hold pressure at a rear wheel, and every one of them is switched off when this valve cannot be trusted.
So the arriving complaint is frequently not about braking at all. Owners describe a vehicle that now rolls back on hills when it never used to, a brake-hold button that does nothing, or a trailer stability warning that appeared on the first tow of the season. Those symptoms feel like separate faults and are often described to a shop as separate faults, which sends the diagnosis in the wrong direction. Reading the brake module codes first, rather than treating each missing feature as its own problem, saves a lot of time.
The second characteristic of this corner is distance. On a left-hand-drive vehicle with the hydraulic unit in the left side of the engine bay, the right rear is the far corner in both senses: its hard line runs the length of the vehicle and then across, and so does its harness branch. It is the longest run of the four, with the most clips, the most grommets and the most underbody exposure. Where a left front fault points fairly quickly at the unit once its short run is checked, a right rear fault has the largest amount of territory in which a wiring problem can hide, and the inspection genuinely has to be done rather than assumed.
It is also the corner most often disturbed by work that has nothing to do with brakes. Tow bars and trailer wiring are fitted at the right rear on many vehicles, exhaust tailpipes and hangers live there, spare wheel wells and rear suspension components share the space. Aftermarket trailer harnesses spliced into the rear wiring are a particularly common source of trouble, because a splice made without a proper seal corrodes from the inside out and can affect circuits that were never intentionally touched.
Common causes
- Corrosion or chafe in the long rear harness branch, the furthest run from the hydraulic unit on a left-hand-drive vehicle
- Poorly sealed aftermarket trailer wiring spliced into the rear harness, corroding and affecting adjacent circuits
- Damage from tow bar installation, exhaust work or rear suspension service on the passenger side
- Water intrusion through a hardened body grommet, travelling along the harness to the lowest connector
- Failed isolation valve or driver circuit inside the hydraulic control unit and module assembly
- Corroded or backed-out terminal at the main connector on the hydraulic unit
- Low system voltage or a high-resistance module ground distorting the valve current measurement
- Rodent damage in the rear underbody harness on vehicles left standing for long periods
Symptoms
- Hill-start assist no longer holding the vehicle on an incline
- Brake-hold or automatic hold feature unavailable, sometimes with its own message on the display
- Trailer sway control warning or unavailability on the first tow after the fault appeared
- ABS lamp on, usually with traction and stability lamps and often the red brake lamp too
- Anti-lock, traction, stability and brake force distribution all disabled
- Base braking normal, with unchanged pedal feel and normal stops in ordinary conditions
- Rear of the vehicle feeling loose in a hard stop, since rear pressure is no longer being limited
- Symptoms starting shortly after a tow bar, trailer harness or exhaust installation
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Start with the brake module codes even if the complaint sounds unrelated. Hill-hold, brake-hold and trailer stability all run through this valve, so a customer describing three separate missing features is usually describing one fault, and chasing each feature independently wastes hours.
- 2.Inspect any aftermarket trailer wiring at the right rear before anything else. Splices made into the rear harness without proper sealing are a well-known source of corrosion that spreads along conductors, and a tow bar installation shortly before the fault appeared is a strong lead.
- 3.Put the vehicle on a lift and follow the harness branch its full length. This is the longest of the four runs on a left-hand-drive vehicle, so it has the most places to hide a fault. Check every clip, grommet and heat shield edge from the hydraulic unit to the wheel.
- 4.Check the body grommets on the right rear specifically. A grommet that has hardened lets water into the harness, and the water then runs to whichever connector sits lowest — which may be some distance from where it got in.
- 5.Voltage-drop test the module power and ground under load, and confirm the battery is healthy. Valve faults are current-measurement faults, and a marginal supply generates them across corners without any valve being defective.
- 6.Compare against the other corners' codes before ordering an assembly. A single right rear code keeps the search in that corner's own wiring; codes from several corners together point at the shared connector, feed, ground or module, and that distinction is worth several hundred dollars.

Wiring outcomes are common on this corner and run $200 to $550, weighted toward labor because the run is the longest on the vehicle and needs a lift to inspect properly. Repairing a corroded aftermarket trailer splice and re-sealing it is $150 to $400 and is worth checking for first when a tow bar has been fitted. A confirmed internal valve failure means the hydraulic unit and module assembly at $600 to $1,100 installed and programmed, or roughly $150 to $350 in parts through a mail-in rebuild. The assembly price does not change with the corner — the code tells you where to look, not what to buy.
