What does C0379 mean?
C0379 sets when the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) detects a fault in the front axle actuator control circuit. Many four-wheel-drive trucks use a front axle disconnect (sometimes called a 'shift-on-the-fly' or front axle actuator) so that in 2WD the front driveshaft and axle shafts can be disconnected to save fuel and wear, then connected again when 4WD is engaged. The actuator is usually a small electric or vacuum-controlled device with an internal position switch that confirms whether the axle is actually connected or disconnected.
When the driver or system commands a shift, the module energizes the actuator and then waits — typically up to about 10 seconds — for the position switch to confirm the axle reached the new state. If it instead sees a short to ground, a short to voltage, or an open circuit, or never gets the confirmation, it sets C0379. To avoid grinding or half-engaging the front axle, the module disables the 4WD system and lights the Service 4WD indicator.
Different references title this code as Front Axle Switch Circuit or Front Axle Actuator Control Circuit; both describe the same circuit. Because C-codes are manufacturer-specific (most documented on GM trucks), confirm your vehicle's exact definition and circuit layout.
As with most 4WD codes, wiring and connector faults are common because the actuator sits low on the front axle in a wet, salty area. Inspect the actuator connector and harness before replacing the actuator itself.
