P2111: Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open

What does P2111 mean?
On a drive-by-wire vehicle the engine control module commands the throttle plate to a position and then verifies it got there using the throttle position sensors. P2111 sets when the module commands the plate closed and the sensors report it is still open beyond the allowed tolerance. This is not a wiring complaint and not a sensor-agreement complaint — the plate is physically not moving to where it was told to go, in the closing direction specifically.
That direction is what makes P2111 the most serious member of the throttle actuator family. Its mirror code P2112 means the plate is stuck closed, which leaves you with a car that will not accelerate: inconvenient and, in traffic, hazardous. P2111 means the plate is stuck open, which leaves you with an engine that may keep making power after you release the accelerator. Engine speed that does not fall when you lift off, or that stays elevated as you brake, is a fundamentally different category of problem, and it is the reason the fail-safe response to this code is aggressive. Depending on the platform the module will cut power hard, force idle, cut fuel to specific cylinders to hold engine speed down, or shut the engine off entirely.
Mechanically, the causes are physical almost every time. Carbon and oil deposits baked around the plate edge and shaft are the leading cause — the same buildup that sets P2109 and P2119 can be heavy enough to hold the plate open outright. A broken, weakened, or unhooked return spring removes the force that closes the plate when the motor is not driving it. A stripped tooth in the internal gear train, a bent plate, worn shaft bushings, or debris drawn in past a poorly sealed air filter can all jam it. On the electrical side, an actuator motor circuit shorted in a way that keeps driving the motor open, or a failed motor winding, will produce the same result.
There is one non-mechanical scenario worth ruling out early: a throttle position sensor that misreports the plate's angle can make a perfectly closed plate look open to the module. If the plate moves freely and snaps shut by hand, and both position sensor signals are healthy across the sweep, look harder at the sensors and their wiring before condemning the throttle body.
Do not treat this code as something to clear and drive on. A throttle that cannot close is the exact failure mode that the entire redundant, self-checking architecture of electronic throttle control exists to catch, and the module catching it is the system working as designed.
Common causes

- Failed throttle actuator motor or a motor circuit shorted in the open-drive direction
- Throttle position sensor misreporting the plate's actual angle
- Corroded or damaged throttle body connector, or a backed-out pin
- Throttle relearn procedure never performed after a cleaning or replacement
- Accelerator pedal held partly open by a floor mat, cargo, or a binding pedal assembly
- Low system voltage from a weak battery or failing alternator affecting actuator control
Symptoms
- Check engine light on with a reduced-power or wrench warning
- Engine speed stays elevated after the accelerator is released
- High or racing idle that will not come down
- Engine surges or revs unexpectedly
- Severe reduced-power or limp mode, sometimes a hard RPM cap
- Engine shuts down or refuses to restart on platforms that respond by cutting fuel
- Vehicle creeps forward at a stop with the brake released
- A fail-safe code from the P2104 / P2105 / P2106 / P2110 group stored alongside it
Diagnostic steps
- 1.Stop driving the vehicle. An engine that may not return to idle is not a fault to road-test casually, and this code should be diagnosed with the vehicle stationary.
- 2.Scan every module and record all stored and pending codes with freeze frame data. Note the accompanying fail-safe code — it tells you which strategy the module chose to keep engine speed under control.
- 3.Check the accelerator pedal and floor area first for a mat, cargo, or debris holding the pedal open, and confirm the pedal returns fully and freely by hand.
- 4.Test the battery and charging system before anything else electrical, since low voltage affects actuator control and can produce positioning faults on healthy hardware.
- 5.With the key on and engine off, compare commanded throttle position against actual throttle position in live data. A commanded value near closed with an actual value well above it confirms the code's premise.
- 6.Remove the intake ducting and look directly at the throttle bore, paying attention to the plate edges and the shaft where deposits accumulate first.
- 7.With the key off and the connector unplugged, move the plate by hand through its travel and release it. It should snap firmly shut. A plate that stays open, returns weakly, catches at a point, or has side-to-side shaft play identifies a mechanical fault immediately.
- 8.Inspect for foreign objects in the bore and check the air filter and intake ducting for a poor seal that would let debris through.
- 9.Inspect the throttle body connector for corrosion, moisture, backed-out pins, and a properly seated locking tab, and check the actuator motor circuit for a short that could drive the motor open.
- 10.Display both throttle position sensor signals together while sweeping the plate by hand. Smooth, proportional tracking with the plate physically closed points at the sensors or their wiring rather than at the mechanism.
- 11.Clean the bore and plate with a cleaner appropriate for the coating, working the plate open by hand rather than forcing it, then run the manufacturer's relearn procedure and retest.
- 12.If the plate binds, the spring is weak, the gear train is damaged, or the code returns after a correct cleaning and relearn, replace the throttle body assembly and perform the relearn again.

A replacement throttle body assembly is the most common outcome for this code specifically, because a broken return spring, a damaged gear train, or a worn shaft cannot be cleaned away — figure roughly $250-$750 installed, with the part alone near $150 on mainstream models and $500 or more on European and luxury platforms. Wiring or connector repair falls between at $100-$400. A relearn is required after any of these. Note that the low end here is higher than for most throttle codes, because a relearn alone rarely fixes a genuinely stuck-open plate.
