What does P2112 mean?

On a drive-by-wire vehicle the accelerator pedal is an input, not a linkage. The engine control module reads the pedal, decides how far the throttle plate should open, drives the actuator motor inside the throttle body, and then confirms the plate arrived using the throttle position sensors. P2112 sets when the module commands the plate open and the sensors report it did not move, or moved far less than commanded.

This is the mirror of P2111, and the direction changes both the symptom and the urgency. P2111 means the plate will not close, and the risk there is an engine that keeps making power after you lift off. P2112 means the plate will not open, and the result is a vehicle that may idle acceptably and creep but has nothing beyond that. On many platforms the engine will not start at all, because a plate held fully shut cannot pass enough air. The immediate danger is different in kind rather than smaller: a vehicle that cannot accelerate is genuinely hazardous when you need to merge, cross traffic, or clear an intersection, and it can leave you stopped in a live lane.

The causes are mostly physical and mostly the same short list as its mirror. Carbon and oil deposits baked around the plate edge and shaft can seize the plate in the closed position — this is the most common single cause. Debris drawn in past a poorly sealed air filter can wedge the plate. A stripped tooth in the internal gear train, worn shaft bushings, or a bent plate from a dropped object or an aggressive cleaning will bind it. On the electrical side, a failed actuator motor, an open motor winding, or a motor circuit that has lost its drive will leave the plate resting closed under spring pressure, which is exactly what a healthy plate does when the motor is not powered — a useful mental model for why this code and the circuit codes overlap in symptoms.

That overlap is worth keeping straight. P2100, P2102 and P2103 are circuit codes and will normally set instead of or alongside P2112 when the fault is a broken or shorted wire. P2118 says the motor's current draw is wrong, which is what a motor straining against a seized plate produces. P2119 says the plate is not landing at the commanded position generally. P2112 is the specific case of that failure in the opening direction. Seeing P2112 with P2118 is a strong combination for a mechanically seized plate.

Expect the module to have withdrawn throttle authority and expect a fail-safe code from the P2104 / P2105 / P2106 / P2110 group alongside this one.

  4. 4.Remove the intake ducting and inspect the throttle bore, looking specifically at the plate edges and the shaft area where deposits build first and bind hardest.
  5. 5.Check the bore for foreign objects and inspect the air filter and intake ducting for a poor seal that would let debris through.
  6. 6.With the key off and the connector unplugged, move the plate open by hand through its full travel. It should move smoothly against spring pressure. A plate that will not budge, catches at a point, feels gritty, or has side-to-side shaft play identifies the fault immediately.

Is it safe to drive with P2112?

No. Even when the engine runs, the vehicle has no meaningful acceleration, and a car that cannot accelerate on demand is dangerous at an intersection, on a merge ramp, or anywhere you might need to move out of the way. There is also a real chance of it stalling and refusing to restart, leaving you stopped in traffic. Brakes and steering work while the engine runs, so moving it off the road is fine, but this vehicle should be towed to the shop rather than driven.
